The Hunger Games and China Glaze Capitol Colors: The Savagery featuring Luxe and Lush, Stone Cold, and Fast Track

First we talked about the Martyrs and Freedom Fighters, then we moved on to the Hopeful and the Obscure. To end this Hunger Games and China Glaze Capitol Colors series with a bang, we'll be zeroing in on the Savagery of the games. After all, when only one is to be declared victor (and sole survivor) among 24 others, you really have to step up your game. For this fourth and last part of the series, we'll look at the characters who are so driven to win that they let the killer instincts in them surface in this kill or be killed scenario. If you're thinking career tributes, then you're definitely on the right track. Without further adieu, here are the polishes that represent these savage few:

They say there's beauty in madness, isn't there?

Nail Art Wednesday: Game of Thrones Inspired Nails

This is definitely turning out to be a great year for fantasy/sci-fi bookworms with adaptations of well-beloved books as tv series and movies turning up left, right and center (The Hobbit is finally coming out end of this year!). After all this excitement over the Hunger Games (have you seen the movie yet? I have and it was awesome!), I've decided to spare you for a day this week. Instead, we'll be channeling our excitement over the second season premiere of another book series that's been adapted into a tv series. We're talking Game of Thrones. (insert excited squeals and flailing here) The first season was intense, but if the books are any indication, it just keeps getting better from here on out. I've just finished the second book, A Clash of Kings, and I'm antsy to keep reading. But with the series still being written and only three more books before a long wait for the next, I've decided to try to read only as far as the next season of the tv series. At any rate, seeing the books brought to life will stem the anxiety to keep reading. So, in the mean time, of course I had to do nail art based on the book/series. Here's what I came up with:

Winter April is coming!!!

The Hunger Games and China Glaze Capitol Colors: The Obscure featuring Electrify, Harvest Moon, and Foie Gras

As of this writing, I still haven't seen the movie, though by the time this post goes live, I would have so it's hard to gauge at this point how Jennifer Lawrence's Katniss Everdeen will measure up to the one my imagination conjured. I have heard lots of glowing reviews so I might have set the bar all the more higher before watching it. We'll see. At any rate, let's continue on with the third part of our Hunger Games and China Glaze Capitol Colors series. Out of the four, this installment will be the hardest to expound on. Simply because it is exactly what it is: Obscure. I suppose with 12 districts to play with, add to that the Capitol and District 13, it was probably difficult for Suzanne Collins to make sure all the districts were well represented. These three fell to the wayside but the colors that represent them still manage to make them shine:

Glitter, foil and creme. Not a trio to sneer at!

The Hunger Games and China Glaze Capitol Colors: The Hopeful featuring Mahogany Magic, Dress Me Up, and Smoke and Ashes

Before I go all fangirl crazy and start flailing about in excitement because today is big movie day, we're continuing with the second installment of the China Glaze Capitol Colors collection. If you haven't caught on yet, I've grouped the polishes specifically based on the traits of the key characters I've chosen to represent each district. Last post was about the Martyrs and Freedom Fighters who gave up their lives and fought for a cause they strongly believed in. In this installment, we'll highlight the Hopeful among them, those who had a knack for finding the silver lining in every grey cloud.

Without further ado:

Earthy and grounded colors for the optimists.

Nail Art Wednesday: Fiery Flame Nails Inspired by the Hunger Games and the Girl on Fire

"Katniss, the girl on fire, has left behind her flickering flames and bejeweled gowns and soft candlelight frocks. She is as deadly as fire itself."
- Suzanne Collins, Catching Fire

Yes, we're doing Hunger Games week here at Polished Indulgence. If you can't tell, we're reaaaaally excited about the movie coming out this weekend and to kick it up a notch, we're doing a flame nail design for Nail Art Wednesday. I swear, the moment I read about Katniss sporting flame nails during that first Hunger Games to go with the whole Girl on Fire thing, I knew I had to do my own take on it. Now, flame/fiery nails aren't exactly something new. I've seen all sort of variations that a simple google of "flame nail art" shows you. On that note, I sure hope you aren't tired of seeing them yet as I've yet another variation to show you today.

I wish I could take all the credit for the technique used behind creating the design, but I can't. It's the brainchild of Lindsey from Neverland Nail Blog where she uses a dry brush to create a gorgeous smoky texture. My first thought upon seeing her tutorial was how perfect it would be to use in a flame design, and so here is what I came up with:

Fiery!

The Hunger Games and China Glaze Capitol Colours: The Martyrs and Freedom Fighters featuring Riveting, Hook and Line, and Agro

It's a mouthful of a title, I know. But there was simply no more concise way to appropriately summarize everything that will be talked about in this post. See, this collection first started as a rumour that was fed by a company leak of photos of the actual colors. Then, there was the threat of lawsuits and even more drama. Thank goodness it was all sorted out to reveal the exact same colors that was originally leaked, albeit with different names that a quick thinking fan pointed out were a representation of each of the 12 districts as outlined in the books. And now, I am the happy owner of the entire collection with the enabling aka pre-order option of the awesome Nail Polish Canada (they even came earlier than expected, double yay!). I know there were some that were skeptical about the color choices, but I feel it did do the books justice. More on that in a bit. While I know that I probably won't wear some of the colors as often as the others, I still felt strongly about wanting the entire set because (to my knowledge) this is the first nail polish collection that's based off a book series. As a certified bibliophile and nail polish addict, this easily made the entire collection a must-have for me.

I wanted to be able to do in-depth reviews for each color in the same fashion as is my usual, but if I stuck to one color per post, that would take me months just to show you all of them! So while I'll still be doing in-depth reviews, instead, it will be with three polishes in the spotlight per post. That will make this series a 4-part one over the next couple weeks and just in time for the movie release on the 23rd (boo yah!). Now, I'm fairly certain that by now, you've seen a bajillion swatches and reviews of this much anticipated China Glaze collection. So I have to raise the bar. To set these posts apart from the flock, I'll be showcasing not just swatches and a review of the actual polishes, but as well as how it ties in with the books. I'll be picking key characters from each of the districts that the nail polishes represent and somehow, show you how they all connect. This is the part where I say beware of spoilers as I'm fairly certain there will be quite a bit. I'll be writing this with the expectation that you've read the entire series. If you haven't read any or all of them yet, read on at your own risk or simply skip the text after the district name and number in bold. Also, if you're a huge Hunger Games fan and disagree with whatever I've written, please don't flame me. Let's just talk about it in the comments, okay? Okay!

Needless to say this will be a preeeetty long post, photo heavy and with walls of text so grab a coffee, sit back and relax. All set? Here we go!

The first three pretties in this series!

Unboxing Julep Maven American Beauty February 2012

Let me preface this post by saying that procrastination will bite you in the @$$ one day. Trust me on this. You see, I've been a serial crammer since high school, working on problem sets and lab reports at the very last minute. What's bad is I cram not because I have to, but because I need to. I thrive in adrenaline induced states as I'm one of the few that tend to focus more with a looming deadline. Otherwise, I tend to multitask to the point where I start everything but finish nothing. I haven't suffered any ill-effects from this horrible procrastination habit that I haven't been able to kick...until now. See, Julep has a window where you can opt to skip the month or change the option for different nail polish color choices. If you miss the window, you get the default option that you got after taking the profiling quiz and you'll expect to receive your box in the mail soon-ish (a few days for those in the US but as my box needs to cross the border I usually get mine in a week to a week and a half). Well, this month I procrastinated and missed that window. So I ended up with the American Beauty polish options that for a nail fiend are pretty...blah. Anyway, you'll see what I mean in a bit. On with the photos!

The box with the logo from the side. What goodies does it hold this month?

Nail Art Wednesday: Green Slim Silhoutte Nails for St. Pat's Day

With St. Pat's Day just around the corner, you betcha I wanted to be sporting a mani to commemorate the occasion. Problem was, it always seems to be about the exact same things: the clover leaf, rainbows and a pot of gold, and leprechauns. I wanted to do something different. But after playing around with attempts to freehand intricate Celtic designs and failing miserably (I blame poor quality brushes the same way Mickey in Fantasia blames the cleaning tools), I decided to play it safe and stay true to my minimalist aesthetic. Better yet when you find out that this particular design was created by the talented Jin Soon Choi of Sally Hansen, in partnership with fashion designer Prabal Gurung, for the S/S'12 runway. It was a way to incorporate softness with a strong statement that the designer wanted to complement his frocks on display. She paired a pale lilac base with a deep purple shimmer. Now, I've been wanting to try this technique since I've seen it and it seems most timely to do it now. It IS Spring 2012 after all, right?

Nars Desperado

Forget the groundhog. Spring is officially in full swing for me once the clocks spring forward that extra hour, which it just did yesterday. I know a whole bunch of you will be moaning about that one hour less of sleep but that's not a bad trade off with better things coming like warmer weather and much more sunshine! While I haven't exactly jumped on any of the Spring 2012 nail polish collections (partly because I wasn't feeling them much and mostly because my wallet had a restraining order underway), I'm revisiting old favorites from past spring collections. At the (oft alarming) rate of polish accumulation I'm going through, it's nice to sit back and enjoy what you already have instead of constantly running after the next big thing. Today's beauty is just that, a Spring 2011 release (with a surprising possible dupe, read on to know what it is!):

Probably the only yellow toned gold I'll ever be able to pull off with aplomb.

Julep Anne

I love a good purple. It's almost as good as a great nude/neutral shade that I'd reach for if I wanted a "safe" pop of color without the eyebrow raising oomph of blue. I feel it's an acceptable deviation from the traditional pinks, reds and neutrals while maintaining the edginess of a non-traditional color. How I came up with this mentality can probably be traced back to my mom and her old school sensibilities. I've mentioned her overwhelming love for red, but she never did like my penchant for blue nail polish. "It looks like you've got frostbite" is what she usually says. Black nail polish merits the "Your nails look dead" comment. White brings about "Did you play with the correction fluid again?". Now, I don't take offense at all because she's always been frank about what she thinks and really, it's hard when you get such a laugh out of all that. So when she last came to visit, I cajoled her into getting out of her comfort zone. I wanted her to try this awesome navy I had just gotten, but she wouldn't budge. I gave her free rein to choose (although I hid all the neutrals, reds and pinks) and after much harrumphing, she ended up with a bottle of purple polish. (For the curious, it was Nubar Moonshadow aka Moon Eclipse.) So when I got the Julep Maven Valentine Mystery Box and saw this pretty purple, I knew it was the one that was getting first dibs on swatching:

I'm fairly certain my mom would approve.

Nail Art Wednesday: Somber Dots and Stripes

After coming up with that busy design last week, I decided to go back to simple and understated. I was reading up on fashion trends and noticed a prevalence of print mixing. Brights and florals are also supposed to be huge (but aren't they ALWAYS huge during spring?) but what caught my eye was mixing patterns. Stripes, plaid, floral, paisley... Apparently, the rules aren't as strict as they once were. You can now mix patterns to your heart's content, provided you do it in a way that doesn't make you look like a clown on the run. Now, there's the tricky part. I wanted to see if I could do just that with my nails and decided on keeping it all grounded by using only two colors and two patterns. The color combination I chose was inspired by an art print that my dad in law left behind (it didn't fit in his luggage). Besides, it felt strangely appropriate with the icky weather we had over the weekend (wasn't that wind on Saturday insane?). As for the patterns, I've been wanting to do polka dots ever since I saw G's take on them at Nouveau Cheap and stripes seemed easy enough to freehand. This is what I came up with:

Unboxing Julep Maven Valentine's Day Mystery Box

When people say that you shouldn't forget to get yourself a gift for Valentine's Day, I kind of took that to heart. But I didn't want to splurge or anything as I'd already been going crazy with nail polish accumulation that started late last year. I've been trying very hard to scale back some but the collections that keep coming out, one after the other, make it even harder to do so. But when I got the email from Julep about a mystery box that would have a total value from $60 to $200 of Julep's Best Sellers for a mere $20, I was sold. That's like getting 66.67% off at the very least! I wasn't even banking on the $200 part. It was also just as well that I skipped February (I wasn't too keen on getting the gold glitter or the hair top coat) so I could get the mystery box without feeling guilty of spending double for the month. But imagine my excitement when I got a bigger than usual box (warning: pic heavy post ahead!):

And red for Valentine's!

Revlon Smoldering

As much as I love me some duo/multichromes, I hate reviewing them. Mostly because I can never seem to photograph them to the point where I can truly showcase the various color shifts that you see in person, and partly because trying to describe such a multi-faceted color can be difficult. But in the spirit of perseverance (and because Hammie insists I get over my aversion to reviewing a particular finish), we'll buck up and forge on as this readily available pretty is something any duochrome lover needs in their arsenal:

See how it looks green, lilac/purple and silver all at once?
